Boeing  has selected Leading Edge Aviation Services to paint 787 Dreamliners assembled at Boeing’s new North Charleston, S.C., final assembly and delivery facility.

Leading Edge will perform the work at its Amarillo, Texas facility where other wide-body airplanes are painted. The company, which specializes in commercial and military aircraft painting, will apply final paint and customer livery to all 787 Dreamliners delivered from the Boeing South Carolina facility.

“Leading Edge is a well-respected company when it comes to painting airplanes,” said David Palmer, director of Boeing’s South Carolina Delivery Center. “The company shares our values of quality, safety and excellence and we look forward to our relationship with them.”

“We began our search for a paint subcontractor soon after we broke ground on our facility, knowing the experience and capacity to paint large commercial airplanes didn’t currently exist geographically close by,” said Marco Cavazzoni, vice president and general manager, Boeing South Carolina Final Assembly and Delivery. “Leading Edge brought immediate capability and capacity and is located within a manageable flying distance from our new facility.”

As 787 Dreamliners complete final assembly and prepare for delivery, the airplanes will make the 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) flight from North Charleston to Amarillo to be painted. The airplanes will then return to South Carolina for final delivery to customers from around the world.

“This paint process is the only difference customers will experience in 787 Dreamliner deliveries from South Carolina. Airplanes built and delivered from both Everett, Wash., and North Charleston, S.C., will be identical, as both sites use common quality management and production systems and meet the same U.S. Federal Aviation Administration requirements,” said Cavazzoni.

Production in the new South Carolina 787 Dreamliner facility is on schedule to begin mid-2011, with first delivery scheduled for 2012.

“These wind-driven wildfires have caused tremendous damage throughout the communities we serve,” stated Jonathan Martindale, president, U-Haul Company of West Texas. “I hope this effort will provide assistance to families that need a helping hand.  We will continue to help our friends and neighbors in this time of need.”

A witness saw a number of youths breaking in to the vacant Puckett Place Apartments, and police arrived at around 11 p.m. Authorities would find a large shindig taking place, replete with minors consuming alcohol and cigarettes.

Naturally, people began to run away when they arrived, breaking open windows and doors to escape. One drunken youth launched a chair at an officer that was blocking an exit, while another was lacerated on broken glass while attempting to flee.

The 33 miscreants were booked into Randal County Jail, with charges including minor in possession of alcohol and tobacco, as well as criminal trespass at the behest of the property manager. The detained included a 15 year old male and a 16 year old female, who were eventually turned over to their parents.

A Ranger pulled over a Buick LeSabre with Colorado plates at about 6 a.m. for a traffic violation. Before the cop even got to the driver’s window, the car sped away. The driver suddenly lost control of the car on Farm-to-Market Road 2186. The car, which was found to have been stolen, came to rest in a ditch and he took off running into a house.

A plethora of law enforcement agents swarmed the house for the man, before finding him four hours later on Red Wing Road and arresting him. He managed to get another car and drive it into someone’s backyard, prompting residents to notify the police.

The Company’s Pilots and Dispatchers now follow these new efficient flight procedures and enhanced avionics to fly specifically designed satellite-based navigation approaches to many Southwest airports. The primary airports with efficient RNP procedures include Amarillo, Birmingham, Boise, Corpus Christi, Los Angeles, Chicago Midway, Oakland, Oklahoma City, West Palm Beach, Raleigh-Durham, and San Jose.

With RNP/NextGen procedures designed at 11 Southwest airports, the Company’s projected savings is $16 million a year, with an anticipated savings of more than $60 million per year once all Southwest airports have efficient RNP procedures.

“RNP is a significant step in the future for the NextGen Air Traffic Control system,” said Mike Van de Ven, Southwest’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “This milestone culminates substantial efforts by our Company working with the FAA to position Southwest as a leading participant in a modernized air traffic control system.”

In addition to modifying 345 Boeing 737-700s with new flight display software and ensuring that all new aircraft are RNP ready, this cross-company effort involving Technology, Maintenance & Engineering, and the Operations Coordination Center also featured intense training efforts to support achieving this milestone.

“I am very proud of our Flight Operations Team for the design, training, and implementation of NextGen procedures, including training more than 5,900 Pilots to fly Primary Flight Display Navigation Display  procedures,” said Captain Chuck Magill, Vice President of Flight Operations. “This extensive training allows us to capture RNP procedures as well as provide flexibility in any new aircraft platform we might use in the future.”

Amarillo Police came to a home on Adams St.at around 11:32 a.m. per a 911 call that stated domestic violence was occurring in the home. Police were looking for a man inside the house that wouldn’t come out – to their faces at least. He escaped out a back door before backup arrived, sight unseen.

They finally figured out he was gone at about 2:30 p.m., even though a mobile unit arrived an hour and a half earlier. When they entered the home, they found a gun but no suspect. No further details are known at this time, but updates will be posted as soon as they are known.

“Texas radioactive waste commissioners are considering new rules that could allow Texas to become the nation’s radioactive waste dumping ground. The volume of waste transported, imported and stored could go up as much as 19 times,” said Tom “Smitty” Smith, director of Public Citizen’s Texas office. “Our state law was designed to protect us from taking waste from many states. Texans could get stuck paying billions to clean up the mess left behind.”

The event was designed to raise awareness about the dangers of hauling so much radioactive waste through Texas towns by truck and rail. While routes are not yet designated, potential routes would take waste from the Gulf Coast area on Interstate 10 through Houston and San Antonio; waste from southern states would be trucked on I-20 and I-30 though Dallas and Forth Worth; Midwestern and Northeastern waste would be driven on I-40 and I-27 though Lubbock and Amarillo; and waste from Western states would be driven though the cities of El Paso and Odessa taking I-10 and I-20, according to Dr. Marvin Resnikoff of Radioactive Waste Management Associates.

“Truck crashes occur all the time on our highways,” Smith said. “This plan would dramatically increase the amount of radioactive waste traveling through our communities. We believe that if people know what is at stake, they will contact state officials and demand that the compact commission drop the proposal.”

NRC rules allow class “A” wastes to be shipped in so-called “strong tight containers,” barrels that do not have to pass any integrity test. About 10 percent of these containers that have been involved in accidents have failed. Of those, 90% released their contents, according to the NRC.
