Baby Missing For Six Years Found in Attic

The corpse of an infant found in an Amarillo attic has been confirmed as that of Miguel Nunez, a boy that was missing since April 2004 at eight months old.

The body was too decomposed to identify, so the identity was confirmed via DNA testing and his cause of death can not be determined. The prime suspect, father Robert Nunez, 36, is still incarcerated in the Potter County Detention Center on a charge of aggravated perjury.

The perjury charge stems from Nunez telling a grand jury on April 21 that the boy was still alive. Other lies include giving the boy to an unknown couple or family and that the boy is in Mexico.

The gruesome discovery was made in an attic on North Seminole Street when a couple renting the home went into the attic to install a ceiling fan. They stumbled upon a plastic ice chest, and when they opened it, a pungent aroma encompassed the area, prompting the couple to call the police.

Investigators say that the chest may have been there for six years, debunking the father’s claim that he was alive. They will hold the child’s body at UNT while police determine how to move forward with criminal charges.
