A murder victim and his family finally have justice – 23 years later.
Florencia Calzada was found dead in a Randall County ditch on December 7, 1986 from a gunshot wound at close range to the back of his head. Johnny Ray Klein, now 48, apparently pulled up to Calzada who was stranded in the ditch near Interstate 27, put a .22 cal to his head and pulled the trigger.
Klein was arrested Monday night in an undisclosed location after a witness came forward and led police to him.
The criminal complaint states that four other people knew about the crime, including one who saw the murder take place. These people were pinpointed on account of an anonymous tip received in late October that suggested the police talk to three people he admitted the crime to. Despite one person’s knowledge of the crime for 23 years, they aren’t being punished.
This may not have happened if Klein was forced to serve all 12 years of his sentence in 1983 for burglary. The oft-jailed man was again sentenced to prison less than a month after the murder, released, then incarcerated again a few months later. The date of his release is unknown.
Police don’t think Klein and Calzada knew each other. Calzada would habitually drive from his house in Lorenzo to Amarillo from work – however, police believe they have a motive for the shooting, which they are keeping mum about.
