Empty Stocking Fund Helping Those in Need Again

The Empty Stocking Fund is back this year to help families in need have a Merry Christmas.

The Amarillo-Globe newspaper started the fund back in 1972 to bring joy to Texas Panhandle residents, having raised $2.7 million to date. This year, the fund expects to raise $100,000.

Nursing homes, agencies and people in general submits applications for aid, which are then screened by a committee who determines how much aid each respective applicant should receive. Many benevolent departments and facilities in the community comprise the committee that selects the applicants.

Despite the lagging economy, readers of the Globe donated upwards of $104,000 last year, which was dispersed amongst 1,230 nursing home patients and 541 other people. The Salvation Army received $25,000 for school socks and shoes, which  helped 1,000 children.

This year, in-kind donations also will be accepted. A group of volunteers, led by Glenn McMennamy, will pick up and distribute gently used items, including furniture and appliances. For more information, call 806-345-3363.

Monetary contributions can be mailed to Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 2091, Amarillo, TX, 79166. The Empty Stocking Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax deductible.

Donations may be made in memory of or in honor of people, and letters of acknowledgement will be mailed upon request. In-kind contributions, such as Ensure or adult diapers, can be dropped off at the newspaper at 900 S. Harrison St.
